“The AUDACITY of YOU!”
- Mrs. Geraldine Goodwin
I can still hear it to this day.
“THE AUDACITY of you!”
From my favorite teacher ever, it was one of Mrs. Goodwin’s go-to phrases whenever we, her 4th & 5th grade students, would have the nerve to talk back, be disruptive, get off task, or do any number of ridiculous things kids do. I didn’t know the word then but the best way to describe the sentiment when uttered was…incredulous. She truly couldn’t believe that we’d have the gall to behave the way we were! Something about that phrase…the emphasis when saying “AUDACITY”, the richness of the sentiment…even then it found fertile ground in my spirit.
“The AUDACITY of you!”
It was received as inquisitions:
“Who do you think you are”?
“What gives you the right”?
“Why do you think you can or should do this”?
That audacity would be at the heart of everything I accomplished. There’s a certain amount of audacity necessary to come from a broken home in the projects on welfare, experiencing abuses, neglect, and dysfunctions, yet still attain multiple degrees, build a decades-long coporate career, then pivot to entrepreneurship and get on the TEDx stage. Somehow I believed that life could be and would be better, if I made it so.
That audacity is also at the heart of what we do here. It’s what fuels many who’ve endured traumas and life changes they didn’t ask for but are summoning the courage to adapt to. We take it as a responsibility to help our clients not only recognize it within themselves and their organizations, but to enhance it.
